Researchers at Colorado State University have developed a novel silver metallogel having antimicrobial properties capable of improving silvers’ antimicrobial lifetime. The novel material is water soluble and does not contain any hazardous solvents. Moreover, the metallogel system is extremely versatile with potential application in wound dressings and solid scaffold systems.

New antimicrobial materials are highly desirable due to the rise in antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Silver hydrogels represent a relatively novel biomedical application for antimicrobial wound dressing due to the intrinsic antimicrobial behavior of silver. Although these types of materials demonstrate an adequate level of antimicrobial activity, the silver nanoparticles suspended within the silver hydrogels exhibit toxicity, especially at relatively high concentrations. 

Therefore, there is a need for better, more versatile materials having considerable antimicrobial properties and negligible toxicity.
