The Colorado State University wheat breeding and genetics program was initiated in 1963 to provide Colorado’s wheat industry with a source of locally-developed winter wheat varieties with superior adaptation for Colorado’s tough climatic conditions. The pipeline cultivars are developed at CSU by the breeding programs and are then trasferred to our commercialization partner, the Colorado Wheat Research Foundation (CWRF). Historically this program has been successful in the commercial market, brings revenue back to the university and significantly helps support the breeding program to develop new cultivars.
Over the years, CSU has played a leading role in bringing new products to market specifically tailored for Colorado’s environment, and has provided continuous improvements in grain yield and grain stability, disease and insect resistance and end-use quality.
